Millerships Big Day Out!

Mansfields U15s went on the road to get their season kick started to gritty Tupton RFC & was made to feel very welcome across the border on a glorious sunny day out in Derbyshire.
New captain Charlie Collier & Vice captain Ben Killey began there tenure with a new look about their team with 4/5 positional changes in the tight 2/3 positional changes across the back row, a new midfield pairing & a change at fullback, that’s a total of 9! Recently buoyed by the hard graft at the coal face the front row Wes Andrews- Sealey, George Burton & Jordon Wright have provided the team a real platform of success at scrum time with good quality ball, that’s not to disregard the efforts of the 2nd row engine room with the big lads adapting to their role, hardworking Smithy & a new look for himself “Bulldog” Jack Stevens.
Playing downwind, down the slope Mansfield started well from the quality kick off & camped on the Tupton 22 & forcing the error, denying Tupton any time or space to clear their lines i.e. pressure. From the resulting scrum after George Burtons apt hooking (made to look straight forward) Mansfield won the ball & after a few phases Trey Foster scored the opening Try after 7 minutes & added a sweetly struck conversion.
Tupton 0 Mansfield 7
With their confidence up, Mansfields consistent play from the forwards & strong running from fearless Winger Tyler Carrington & brave new 12 Ben Killey had Tupton on the back foot. Soon the mounting pressure was to much & 5 minutes later Trey got a second try after some real individual skill to score after good service from scrum half James Lane & fly half Charlie Collier, extras added.
Tupton 0 Mansfield 14
With more of the same patterns of play & another strong run from Tyler, who nearly got across the try line himself but only to be put into touch a single yard out. The resulting Tupton line out throw was called not straight gave Mansfield the put in 5m scrum. New number 8 Chandler Gregory relished the tight space to work in & out flanked the blinside defense to score a well worked try. Trey pinged the conversion.
Tupton 0 Mansfield 21
Changes made from the sidelines to rest county trialists from the day before & rotate through the squad saw debutants Connor Croshaw & Ben Heyes who have shown great skill in training together in the midfield. From the resulting restart Ben Heyes gathered ran, ran some more, dipped, dived ,ducked & dogded, got around the defense on the outside shoulder, found a gap at full speed & with one to beat he drew a high tackle which was not acceptable in the referees view resulting in a penalty try, extras added. Tempo running is a true & rare art! 7 more points…Well done hes first of many.
Tupton 0 Mansfield 28
Adam Banton gives Tyler a breather & does a good job mopping up on his wing & covering midfield on the odd occasion Tupton make a rare visit to Mansfield 22 as did fullback Jack Sibeko. On the other wing Lewis Millership the last of the back three, the birthday boy is having a stormer! Darting runs, looking for work, coming inside & helping out at the rucks! All the hard work nearly paid off as he was denied on the try line buy some stoic defence by the Tupton lads. Also telling forging runs by Asher Freeman & Chandler backed up by Braden Pressley- Cook superb work at openside flanker gave Mansfield some great field position for more scoring opportunities…
But credit where credits due for a developing Tupton side, they started to get in the game more & their heads never dropped.
The ball came to Connor who took it upon himself to relieve some good Tupton pressure down the right flank, with his direct running busting tackles left, right & centre he took the ball to the oppositions 22. Then after some good support by all the forwards & Smithy keeping the ball alive, Mansfield managed a gem of a try across from the left kerb to the right post which was a joy for the Mansfield coaching staff to watch top marks for James & Charlies short sharp passing & Ben Killeys link up play put Trey in for his hat-trick, just the 5 points
Tupton 0 Mansfield 33
From the restart a skewed kick across the breeze which landed awkwardly caught the Mansfield forwards knapping which resulted in Tupton line out. The quick thinking Tupton hooker through the ball into an awaiting prop forward who showed Mansfield a clean pair of heels to score a well worked, well deserved score, no extras.
Tupton 5 Mansfield 33 Half time.
Tuptons fortunes changed now with the wind & slope, they played with a lot more confidence, heading deeper into Mansfields territory as they got their running game going. After some good possession one of the many big Tupton forwards ran from deep (harder to mark) to force his way through & score, no conversion.
Tupton 10 Mansfield 33
Another score quickly followed which raised concern amongst the brains trust of the coaching staff who decided to rest our big lads, bringing Jack Sibeko up from fullback to deputise at 2nd row & Ben Killey soon to join in, releasing Connor & Bens Hayes in the midfield once again.
Tupton 15 Mansfield 33
Mansfield got back up the park with strong runs from the big smiling Wes who seemed to take all the opposition forwards on by himself only to fall just short on a couple of occasions, ball carrying & link up play from Jordon gave Mansfield even more “Go forward “
With more centre of the park battles over the next 10 mins the next score would be decisive.
A slight change of tactic with some clever quality low kicks behind Tupton into space from Charlie & Trey relieved the pressure & broke the deadlock. With a quick counter attack launched from a kick through Mansfield popped up the ball for the awaiting Lewis Millership in support for a true wingers poachers try! His first of many for the club for sure & a very important one to kill off the game
Tupton 15 Mansfield 38 Full time
A really really good performance, one of the best so far & a good result for Mansfield U15s, against a creditable Tupton opposition.
Mansfield had confidence going into this game after winning the same fixture last season, but 2/3 thirds of the Tupton team has changed back filled with some Amber Valley lads & they were a lot better, JUST GOES TO SHOW YOU, THAT WE PLAY THE TEAM INFRONT OF US WITH CONFIDENCE, SIMPLE.
Thanks to Steve Grainger who refereed the game fairly & took the job on at the last minute.
