With the first home game of 2026 being postponed due to snow, it was rescheduled to this past weekend. However, nobody told Mother Nature this and, as she is wont to do, she tried her best to ruin another weekend of rugby. It was all for naught, though, as the Eakring Road pitch managed to absorb the downfall and drain well enough for the game to go ahead. Despite damp, stodgy conditions, both teams were able to contest a competitive affair that was equal parts enthralling and frustrating. Largely even for the first half, the home team were able to pull away and claim a victory.

Head coach Anthony Jones was left with mixed feelings: ‘We held our own in a lot of areas but we made things difficult for ourselves at times.’

The game followed a pretty regular pattern for the first half: both teams exchanging scores, making ground and, more often than they would like, dropping the ball. That’s the story of this game, the weather frustrating the teams almost as much as they frustrated each other. The turf was heavy underfoot, the ball was slippery in hand and both teams had to contend with the additional brick walls in front of them as both defences were outstanding. Despite all this, the first half was pure entertainment. The home team secured some early possession and territory, picking up penalties as they asked questions of the visitors. Not letting the momentum die, a quick tap saw Kyan Johnson dive for the line and open up the scoring. A successful conversion from Taran Elms saw the blue-and-whites in the lead, 7-nil.

Casuals had their own plan and so began a half of back and forth that saw the visitors ask similar questions of Mansfield. The only way the home team were able to answer these questions was to do so illegally, resulting in the blue-and-whites receiving a yellow card and conceding a penalty try, 7-all. However, as part of the anything-you-can-do-we-can-do-just-as-well mentality this game had, Casuals also got themselves a yellow card and Mansfield took the opportunity to spin the ball wide, Sam Blackwell utilising the space well to add a second for his team. A tricky conversion was missed but the lead was regained, 12-7. Casuals responded in kind again, punishing the home defence until they were able to even up the scores. A similarly tricky conversion was missed but the scores were again even, 12 apiece.

As half time approached and it became clear that this game could possibly be decided on the smallest margins, Elms opted to take three points from a penalty, just edging out in front as the half time whistle blew, 15-12.

The second half became a bit scrappier as both mistakes and indiscretions crept into the game. Penalties were conceded, balls were dropped, lineouts went askew. The home team got the first score of the second half, a series of phases and nice running lines saw Zane Chiappetta break through the defence and sprint 30 metres to score. This, along with his other support lines, saw him pick up the player of the match award from matchday sponsors the Eakring Old Boys. The conversion was missed but with the three points from before half time, the blue-and-whites had made this a two-score difference, 20-12.

Casuals did their absolute best to stifle anything Mansfield tried over the next 20 minutes. With scores of possession and territory, the home team just could not add to their score. It was ferocious and fierce. Mansfield were their own worst enemy at times but that shouldn’t take away from what was excellent defence from the visitors. The home team did eventually break the damn, a scrum leading to some good phase work and Reece Flowers-Lane gladly diving over the line for the much-desired bonus point try. Elms slotted the conversion to take the game out of reach at 27-12.

Mansfield did get a second yellow card for their efforts and spent the last 10 minutes or so largely in possession but just couldn’t find that final link in the chain. Casuals will no doubt be disappointed not to add anything to their score in the second half but they can be heartened by the resilience of their defence. For how long they were under pressure, they did not yield easily. This was a frustrating game for Mansfield and, at times, they were at risk of losing their shape. But that was a Mansfield from previous years, this team was able to regroup and try again. It may have taken longer than they wanted, but they eventually got that bonus point to keep their place at the top of the table steadily more secure.
