Announcement

It is with great sadness we have to announce that Dave Kilford has passed away.

Former player and old friend of the club, Dave Kilford has sadly passed away. Dave had been diagnosed with MND last year and succumbed peacefully in his sleep yesterday afternoon. In a seasonal note, which you can read below, Dave sent a message of greetings and goodwill to all club members whilst reminiscing about his time at the club.

Club Chairman Andy Foster said, "When Dave sent that note through at Christmas it was sad to hear about his diagnosis but also great to read his notes as it brought back many happy memories. I'm so pleased that Dave was able to reminisce on his time at the club with great fondness. We were a relatively young club back then and one could argue rugby life was much simpler. We certainly had a great time and Dave and Pauline were right in the middle of things. As a young player Dave welcomed me with open arms and it is something that I will always be grateful to him for. It is very sad that we have to say goodbye to another old friend and our thoughts and best wishes are very much with the whole Kilford family at this time."

More information will follow about Dave's funeral arrangements.

Message from an old friend!

Following Dave Kilford's (Kilf) diagnosis of MND, he has sent a message for club members past and present...

Greetings to all at the Rugby Club!

Especially to those that I have known for some considerable years now. It has become difficult due to being diagnosed with MND some 9 months ago. Doddie Weir is doing a great job increasing peoples’ awareness of the disease. Try on Catch-Up Doddie Weir ‘ONE MORE TRY’.

However, memories of joining the club and being warmly invited by Tony Bull to training during the weeks prior to moving to the area and then of course to Byron Edwards. So when I then moved up here there was always a welcoming atmosphere for me and my family.

Memories, yes a lot of them. Playing at Black Scotch Lane and then back to the Little Barn Lane Club. Social events, bonfires, Jumble sales generating monies towards a club of our own. TED LANE fantastic !!!!!!! Being part of the club and the energy and camaraderie that went into that. The BBQ in August starting at first with the generosity of Bob Jamieson’s in-laws to hold the event on their property in Ravenshead and onwards to Abacus Lighting and their support through to the tremendous August Bank Holiday event.

Singing at the club was a must generally conducted by Byron over a few pints after the game. The ‘Wiffenpoof ‘song. What on earth was that about????? (a drinking song) but we all learnt the words eventually and Embo’s version of ‘Sixteen Tons’. This was all part of the camaraderie and welcome to the club to girlfriends, wives, families and all. Get involved create your own fun and laughter. Plenty of it. Many memorable occasions and personalities developed.

With the feed from Local schools the team became more successful on the playing field also down to some coaching from Bryn Howell and I enjoyed with Danny Thompson, Dylan Howells many a time with the Youth teams. Some of the best times developing their characters. A real pleasure.

So with these memories and more the best of health to all and enjoy the family and friendships through the Christmas period and beyond.

Cheers......................KILF

Club Chairman Andy Foster commented, "It was my pleasure to play rugby with Kilf back in the late seventies and early eighties. I was a teenager coming into a side with great experience and pretty much in awe of all the names he has mentioned here in his seasonal message to us all. It was a great time and Kilf was an exceptional player, as was both his sons who played for the club Antony and Wayne. We are all saddened by his diagnosis and Kilf has connected with Doddie Weir, who spoke at the club dinner in 2013, to help fund more research into finding a cure for MND. The Christmas period is certainly a time for reflection and many of us will be thinking back to those early days in rugby with very fond memories. We are all sending Kilf and the whole family our very best wishes".
