MANSFIELD III 15 SOUTHWELL II 5
Mansfield 3rds took on a 2nd team outfit in way of Southwell this weekend and deserved the 15-5 win. This game was to be a measure of how far the blue and whites had come from last season. The result was a good one with Mansfield playing Southwell off the park never letting the big fast backs get into their stride although Southwell did strike first in the first 10 minutes. The Mansfield forwards steam rollered the Southwell pack from here on in taking control of the game. Camping in the visitors 22 for most of the first half it was a break from a maul where Steffen, Chapman and Berryman drove over the line but Steffen was deemed to have been held up. It was a interception by Williams on half way that equalised the scoring and Smith’s conversion took Mansfield to a 7-5 lead at half time. The second half was more of the same, Mansfield applying constant pressure on Southwells try line. McGregor called for posts 60 mins in for Smith to give Mansfield a 10-5 cushion and good hands into the corner saw loose head prop Kirkbride go in for a score 10 minutes later to seal the game. This was a big win for the lads of the 3rd team giving them plenty reason to smile with pennant games coming up in the next few weeks.
